Our Organic Blue Green Algae comes from aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Simply known as AFA, a fresh, water unicellular algae, AFA is rich in a photosynthetic pigment with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties called phycocyanin. As an antioxidant, phycocyanin has shown to prevent oxidation of red blood cells and blood lipids which promotes cardiovascular health. It has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme responsible for the initial process of inflammation and pain in the body known as COX-2. Moreover, recent scientific analysis of AFA has revealed the presence of the amino acid phenyl ethylamine (PEA) in significant amounts.  PEA is a compound naturally produced by the brain and is responsible for the mediation of experiences associated with pleasure and mental awareness.  Known to alleviate depression, PEA has been shown to elevate mood and to play an important role in improving concentration and mental performance.
