Overview

A member of the same family as blueberry and bilberry, cranberry is originally from North America. Grown in bogs, cranberry is used medicinally once ripe. In addition to its antioxidant properties, traditionally cranberry has been used to prevent kidney stones as well as to remove toxins from the blood. Cranberry has also been recommended for its ability to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Research has shown that cranberry prevents E. coli which is the most common bacterial cause of UTIs. Proanthocyanidins, a class of nutrients from the flavonoid family, found in cranberry have an anti-adherence action in the bladder that reduces the ability of bacteria to form and cause a UTI. Further studies have shown cranberry’s ability to reduce bacteria levels significantly over placebos as well as decrease the recurrence of UTIs in those frequently plagued with the infection.

Cautions

• Cranberry has not been reported to cause side effects and has no known contradictions to use when breast-feeding or during pregnancy.
• Although shown to be effective in preventing urinary tract infections, cranberry should not be used to treat or used as a substitute for antibiotics during an acute urinary tract infection except under medical supervision.
