Overview
Until the late 1950s, selenium was thought to be toxic but is now known to be an essential trace mineral and powerful antioxidant mineral. Although it can indeed be toxic at high doses (more than one milligram a day), it is now recognized as an important element of nutrition. Selenium is an important part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. It helps protect cells against the effects of free radicals that are produced during normal oxygen metabolism.

Recommended Dosage

Typical daily dosage is 100 mcgs; dosages used in clinical trials range from 21 - 200 mcgs. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for selenium is 55 mcgs and states that daily intake from all sources should not exceed 400 mcgs per day; take 1 capsule, one to two times daily with meals.
Cautions

Large doses (800 mcgs or more daily) can cause toxicity with symptoms such as: loss of hair and nails, skin lesions, nervous system abnormalities, digestive problems and garlicky breath. Consult a health care practitioner if you experience any of these symptoms while taking selenium.

In long term clinical studies, no adverse effects were reported at use levels of 200 mcgs per day, in the form of an organic selenium supplement.
