Overview

Boswellia is a genus of trees known for their fragrant resin which has many pharmacological uses particularly as anti-inflammatories. A moderate to large branching tree found in the rolling dry hills of India, when boswellia’s trunk is tapped, a gummy resin exudes. This resin consisting of essential oils, gum, and terpenoids is gathered and purified as an extract to be used in many herbal preparations. The terpenoid portion contains boswellic acid, the major active component in boswellia, which has shown anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic effects in studies. Traditionally boswellia has been used to treat arthritis, cough sores, snakebites, and asthma. The pharmacological effects of boswellia in the body are similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); however boswellia seems to have fewer adverse effects.
