Overview

 

Lycopene is an antioxidant compound found most notably in tomatoes and certain other fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, pink grapefruit, pink guava, papaya, red bell pepper, and rose hip. Tomatoes and tomato based sauces, juices, and ketchup account for approximately 85% of the dietary intake of lycopene in the typical diet. A common carotenoid, lycopene is not an essential nutrient in the human diet but it is still biologically important nonetheless. Lycopene is present in humans in human serum (blood plasma) and skin as well as the liver, adrenal glands, lungs, prostate, and colon. In addition to its antioxidant activity, lycopene also scavenges for free radicals through out the body. Lycopene may also be the most powerful carotenoid quencher of singlet oxygen - an unstable form of molecular oxygen responsible for the damaging effects of sunlight on organic materials. When exposed to ultraviolet light, singlet oxygen is a primary cause of skin aging. Studies have shown lycopene’s quenching action as being 100 times more effective than Vitamin E.
